Hello All,
Following up on the Lightning talks last night and discussions at last
night's SLUG meeting. Unfortunately, I didn't get any names - so, it would
be good if anyone who was there would like to identify themselves,
particularly in relation to my notes below.
The talk which prompted the discussion about types of memory and the
utilities demonstrated, though I don't recall their names, was enlighting.
A useful diagram about the types of memory (L1-L3) in relation to
multi-core processors was put up...the URL for that diagram would be welcome.
Someone mentioned a talk (by a woman) at LCA 2011 or 2012 about numerous
levels of Caching.
From the quck brainstorming session it seems there may be a role for
SysAdmins in Purchasing, System Design decisions/Tuning/Capacity Planning,
Someone mentioned the role of the Sys Admin being that of "Generalist" akin
to your local GP and quite different to that of a programmer. So, are there
particular education or professional standards in place or required?
Someone else mentioned CPANEL - which prompted me to remember a time, when
a good deal of a Sysadmins time was spent doing user account management and
licensing.
Where are the SysAdmins in the Outsourcing, Software as a Service,
Virtualisiation, Hosting, Cloud world?
Service Level Agreements and Service Contracts encompass a Sys Admin role -
where is the accountabilitiy/what constitutes due diligence?
Irma raised the issue of Archiving and Managing data.
Feel free to continue the discussion about aspects of being an Information
Systems Administrator - I think it is worthwhile and am not sure where
exactly it will go.
Other than being invited to contribute a chapter, I am not involved in the
production of the book: Organizational, Legal, and Technological Dimensions of
Information System Administration.
The call for papers closes on 30 Sep, If anyone feels like they would like
to contribute a chapter the requirements are here:
