Hi Grant, Are you talking about the EXT filesystem?
Also, when you say your previous attempt at unmounting the disks caused the system to fail. Do you mean it simply crashed, or do you mean there was a catastrophic loss of data? And what kinds of troubles have you been having with the two disks and the RAID?
