hi everyone,

i am currently doing a project on XML and i stumbled onto the issues
with microsoft's effort to make its new XML based document standard
recognised.

i am curious, why would they even want to change from binary based
office format to an XML based format, its benefits compared to the old
binary based?

i have been finding but seems fruitless

anyone mind enlighting me?

Try googling "benefits of open standards"

"They" (as you put it) don't want to change - it is pressure from government and industry for standardisation.

If you are a large customer or government and want to be able to read and manipulate your documents in the future you don't want them tied into a proprietary format requiring proprietary software to read them say some 30 years in the future (long after MS has desupported old office versions). With an open format and standard you can still get at your data.

If you are a vendor who wants to implement a solution that works with office documents but remains free of the dependence on a proprietary format and proprietary software, then an open standard would also be very helpful.

There are many more reasons...

Michael.
