They are in fact loosely speaking already a joint effort - the line
between them I believe is blurry. LUGS' primary use at the moment is as
an official organisational contact as they are a Singapore registered
society. SLMG is hosting all of the linux meetings at the moment due to
meetup's great meeting organization platform and the very meritorious
efforts of Daryl and co. I know what it takes to keep the meetings
flowing as in years past I had put much effort into this too.

I am still officially LUGS Vice President and I have both spoken at and
attend SLMG group meetings as well as staying in regular contact with
Daryl. We see no need to duplicate their great effort on the regular
meetups and if we host any specific LUGS meetings, I am sure they will
be joint SLMG/LUGS meetings (we have done this in the past and in fact
the two groups had agreed to give each other sister status).

The main difference is in LUGS society status which is both a blessing
and a burden i.e. great as an official contact for open source related
issues and events, although we have the burden of maintaining a
constitution, membership fees, and getting volunteers who are interested
in duties related to the various administrative obligations of a
registered society.

You will see some effort this year in reviving LUGS activities in
augmenting/supporting the efforts of the SLMG and do expect to see more
joint activities (as I'm sure I can say this on behalf of Daryl).

We hope to be holding a long overdue LUGS AGM soon - it is a member led
organisation, so its activities represent the communities interest in
maintaining such an organisation. Anyone interested can stand for
election to LUGS committee posts which are democratically elected from
those interested in maintaining the organisation. i.e. you guys.

In any case I see SLMG and LUGS as very much the same team (albeit with
varying administrative boundaries).

Michael Clark,
Vice President,
Linux Users' Group (Singapore)
