He has built a bunch of small linux boxes using Intel atom.
You can also consider the VIA C7's. very low power and compact.

Installed gentoo 64bit os on compact flash. Installed two 1Tb sata drives.
Works great.
Needed to remove the realtek 8196 network module from the kernel
otherwise during the bootup it will hang. Must install the realtek 8101
module. The source is available at realtek website.
