Hi all, Thanks for all the suggestions!
Just an update, i tried out the freezer technique, and managed to recover all the less important stuffs as well! Amazing! :-) As for getting a replacement portable media, i'm still rather torn between getting another 2.5" HDD, or a USB flash drive. The thing is that a flash drive sort of gives me more peace of mind, due to its lack of moving parts, since most of the time i will be using it on the go. However, i won't be able to use JFFS2 as some of you suggested. This is because, the main use of the portable media is to bring along a Ubuntu VirtualBox image for use with my work laptop on overseas trips, and unfortunately, i have to use XP on my work laptop. Actually, i'm happy enough if the HDD or flash drive lasts 2 - 3 years. The main worry is being left high and dry when it dies. With that in mind, i'm more inclined towards getting a large capacity USB flash drive, but running the image off my laptop as opposed to running straight off the flash drive (i.e. copy files to the laptop before use, and syncing them back after), both to conserve write cycles, and also to prevent the flash drive dying in the midst of use. Thanks for all the advice!
