This is my own personal take. If your aim is to program in Linux, I'd
suggest immersing yourself in the environment. Find out which open
source programs resonate with you best and visit the project website
and find the section for developers/contributing. This section usually
provide details on where to get the source code (i prefer the one with
svn/cvs access compares to simply a tarball source code) and some
guides on understanding the code. This would give you (some) extra
motivations to learn, and, you'll also get to learn from the project.
Hopefully, of course, once you've learned a little, you'll contribute
back. This last step is pretty crucial if you're aiming to be a good
programmer. Typically, programmers hav this "pride" that usually
resulted in them spending more time writing good code when it's going
to be viewed by other people. (Personally, I'd suggest starting to
contribute test codes.)
