One more thing to consider is the energy bill. I think Dlink may use much less power than an old pc. So there is some savings in using products like Dlink. Products like Dlink has no moving parts. So less likely to break. Next is the time. Time taken to setup a linux machine as compared to one that is ready made. Can save time to do other things.
