Have you specified mpi=pmi2, either in your command line or in slurm.conf?

Well to be fair to you srun does list it as an option even though it
doesn't appear to be installed..

[samuel@snowy-m ~]$ srun --mpi=list
srun: MPI types are...
[...]
srun: mpi/pmi2
srun: mpi/openmpi
[...]
