Open Forum

"Does Asian Regionalism have Legs?"

Market connections among Asian economies are strong and deepening, but Asian
regionalism has been slow to develop. Previous efforts to jump-start Asian
regionalism have typically turned into false starts. Dr. Petri argues,
however, that the prognosis today is much better: Asian integration now "has
legs," in the sense that a new regional environment has emerged in the last
decade that is more conducive to regionalism than the environment has been
at any time in the past. The author will discuss what accounts for the
change in the region's attitudes toward integration. Where is it likely to
lead? What sequence of policies could help strengthen regional
institutions?
