Ok, so it's not that you were mistaken about the FCC limit of 36db EIRP, it may have just been easier or less expensive for you to certify the radio as a system with a total of 30db EIRP. I can understand that.
BUT, when you have a sector you want to set up, and you have a 14.5db 90 degree antenna you want to use, and the radio only puts out a maximum of 17.5db then your total EIRP is only going to be 31db (taking into account 1db loss for the antenna cable) That's still 1/4 of the power that is allowable, and 31db in our area will only get you about 3-4 miles of workable signal. We've used an AMP to push the total EIRP right up to 36db and are now able to get clients at 10 miles with a medium sized antenna and no AMP on their end. With an AMP on the client end we've been able to hook them up at 16.5 miles away. So as you can see, the need for more power coming from the radio would be very helpful. Typical db gain of a sector antenna ranges from 10db to 12db, with some of the newer ones going up to 14db. If the AirPoint and AirPointPRO were to put out a maximum of say 23db (200mW) or in my wildest dreams 26db (400mW) then putting on an 11db antenna would put you right at 36db. For larger antennas we can turn down the power.
