Low RSSI would make sense. Perhaps the unit associates for some time but
due to weak RSSI, continues to scan for a better AP. 

What kind of throughput you get? I would expect it to be quite low
because it is associated for only part of the time. 

Two units in a row at the same location would be heck of a coincidence
for them to have identical failure.

What was the signal strength? I have seen this but only when the

and quality are around 30-40%.
