I still don't understand how the BCU that YDI claims will help the "hidden node" problem I think that is bull because in no way shape or form does their BCU communicate with any radios it is just a device that throttles bandwidth based on mac or IP address. Now if you were to use that same software and stick a radio card on the same BCU computer and let the BCU manage the radio cards THEN maybe you can manage RTS CTS. Even then I don't think I saw that feature on the radio /BCU setup we set up for a friend who ordered just the BCU software direct from www.demarctech.com for $300 which you can load on any old PC don't ever by the one from YDI its the same stuff we get from the above manufacturer for a savings of $2200! but you have to provide the Old PC which costs you what $100 that's what I have invested in my BCU set up if even that with lan cards and new harddrive..
Just managing bandwidth alone does not affect collisions I don't care if you are going 128kbps or 1.5 megs the radio talking to the other radio is where the breakdown is and it does not matter in my opinion how big or small the packet it is trying to send or receive from the AP but I may be wrong someone please correct me HEHEHE ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike @ Nitrous" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2003 7:22 AM Subject: RE: [smartBridges] Hidden Node [Was: Competitive Marketing question] My understanding and the way I have it set is on all clients. Otherwise you still may have an increased tendency toward hidden node collisions. Check out this powerpoint presentation by YDI on their BCU unit (http://www.ydi.com/bcu/index_files/frame.htm) . What I found interesting was the test results on the effect it had on the "on" time for the client radio in transmit mode. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Blazen Wireless Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2003 10:14 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [smartBridges] Hidden Node [Was: Competitive Marketing question] Now do you turn RTC CTS on all clients or just ones that tend to be further out from the AP? I have heard mixed results on this question. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike @ Nitrous" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2003 6:45 AM Subject: RE: [smartBridges] Hidden Node [Was: Competitive Marketing question] Not only do you get packet loss from the original transmission, but then you also have increased congestion from the re-transmissions that are occurring. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Martin Moreno Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2003 8:55 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [smartBridges] Hidden Node [Was: Competitive Marketing question] Collisions are translated into "packet loss" if I am not mistaken I think on both the CPE radio and AP. Lowering the RTS CTS threshold will help minimize that issue. Usually the ability to change these settings you will find on higher end radios. This is not found as a feature on the linksys stuff for example which is NOT designed for heavy use in a WISP environment.
