Yes, this is possible.  We run both public and private IPs on our network.  
Keep in mind that the routers themselves have no idea whether you're using 
public or private IPs--they have no concept of a public versus a private IP.

To a router, an IP is an IP.  To make this work, it's simply a matter of 
putting the appropriate routes in your routers so they can reach both the 
private and the public networks.  Depending on what you're trying to do, you

may also have to assign both a public and a private IP to certain router 
interfaces.
