What I have done is set the client CPE as static IP for management (easy to
identify) reasons and have the client PC's utilizing DHCP. I had difficulty
as well with the CPE utilizing DHCP as the DHCP request would normally be
performed before the CPE was associated. Having the DHCP server on the
wireless side of the client network is where the problem is, in my case
anyways. If the DHCP server were on the client LAN I am sure the DHCP
function would work fine. Of course that is not feasible. Setting an IP by
MAC address, although very easily done depending on what is being used for a
DHCP server, does not prevent someone from going into the network properties
and setting it statically anyways which could result in a duplicate IP on
the network. So yes, you can control the IP, but not the end user if they
start "mucking" with it.

Subject: [smartBridges] Locking down an ip address to a MAC

I apologize if this is a very basic question.

When my wireless portion of my ISP was first installed, the company that
installed it set up a DHCP server. I have since done away with that
concept as it doesn't seem as reliable (though it is more flexible and
easier to adapt if your ip pools change) as static ip assignments.

My question is, is there any way you know of to "tie" an assigned ip
address to a given MAC? My concern is that one of my customers might go in
and change their ip address and have it conflict with someone else on my
network. If it's possible, I'd like to prevent this.

Thanks
Sam
