My wife says to check the kid manual page 101. "There is no peace and quiet after kids."
I use all my time to work on why my clients are not connecting. And the ones who do connect sometimes are complaining about getting 300 to 400 and not 500 plus Kbps for my price of $19.99. Go figure why they don't call the cable company or direcway and ask why they pay $60 plus dollars for broadband. :) -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Kevin Proctor Sent: Saturday, October 18, 2003 9:45 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [smartBridges] [smart Bridges] Amps! Just don't start complaining about the squirrels with two tails... :-) There are several things to consider when using AMPs. 1. AGC is the best way to go. That way you know exactly how much power is available at the output of the AMP. The TT AMPs are nice because you can put anything from 1db, to 100db into it and you will always get the rated power out of the AMP. 2. Never use an AMP with an Omni. It just sprays signal everywhere and you get multipath out the ... 3. Always put the AMP at the top. A short pigtail to the antenna. That's it. If you put the AMP at the bottom you are just amplifying the noise on the coax along with your signal and it wont help you any. 4. Less is more. A 1 watt AMP is useful if you are setting up a 50 mile point to point link. Otherwise just put a 19db grid on it and tie a bag of microwave popcorn on a stick and hold it in front of the antenna for an hour for a tasty treat. :-) A 250mW AMP with a 14db sector has proven to be about the best combination for us in this heavily congested RF environment. With an AGC AMP we're putting 24db out, then 2db loss for the pigtail to the antenna, then a 14.5 db 90 degree sector. With that combination we've been able to link up with a customer at just over 16.5 miles. 5. Resist the urge to put an amp on a customer end. It just makes a mess of the RF in the area. 6. Even though you are running an uncertified system, be very aware that you need to stay as close as possible to the legal limit, if not just a hair under it. All it takes is a phone call from a HAM that has the equipment to measure how much power you are putting out of your sector antenna and you'll have to fix it or be shut down. Yes, we aren't running certified, but we aren't running over powered either. (we tried it and it didn't work well anyway) It's best to do everything you can to keep the noise floor down. AMPs are great, when used with a little planning.
