It is not required to set the default gateway setting on the device if you do not need to access them from different or outside network. In fact, the IP address or gateway configured for the device does not prevent you to access remote network as the devices are bridge layer 2 only. But at times if you need to monitor or ping the device, it is best that you keep to same IP subnet.
After configuring the device, try power cycle both the units (to clear of any ARP issue), for tendency you might use the same PC to configure both devices; this usually help during initial setup to get it working.

Is the gateway setting all that important? I am using private IP#'s and don't need a gateway entered, in fact... I don't have a gateway for this subnet. I never access the radios from outside the network.
Could this be
the problem?
