Tom,
we have had at least 4 customers who were within 4 miles of our AP and had a direct LOS but couldn't get a stable signal with the ABT's 13 DBI built in antenna.  (RSSI and LQ were very unstable and would drop to Zero)  We installed ABO's at their locations with a 24 dBi grid dish antenna and Whamo! Solid signal, satisfied customer.
One of these that I remember was a customer living close to 345KV transmission lines, I don't know if the RF from the lines was causing the problem or if their was other interference but the grid dish solved the problem.
regards,
Del
