The drives database has absolutely no influence on the capability of
smartctl to run. Smartmontools has database entries to apply adjustments
to the output of smartctl (e.g. Attribute 9 [Power_On_Hours] is
sometimes given in minutes for some disk brands) or to apply counter
measures against firmware issues.

If you get
Device is:        Not in smartctl database [for details use: -P showall]
on your smartctl output, this does not mean anything, just the
correct drive name is not displayed. At the moment, no WD drive needs
specific quirks which would alter the smartctl output.

If I understand you correctly, you seem to have troubles to run smartctl
on some SAS interface.
Which version of smartctl have you tried? Have you also tried the latest
development code from cvs? What is the output?
