I had success with both regular and 48-bit commands using "-d sat" on the USB interfaces of "Lacie Rugged Triple Interface (USB 2.0/Firewire 400/Firewire 800)" external disk drives .
I have three different-sized drives from that series (160GB, 250GB, and 320GB), and see they all have the same USB bridge, 059f:100c. Command output (from the 250GB drive) is attached below.
