I just received a new USB enclosure here that is not detected by
smartctl:

$ sudo smartctl -i /dev/sdb
smartctl 6.6 2016-05-31 r4324 [x86_64-linux-4.8.0-2-amd64] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-16, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke,
www.smartmontools.org

/dev/sdb: Unknown USB bridge [0x174c:0x1351 (0x100)]
Please specify device type with the -d option.

Use smartctl -h to get a usage summary

The device is a Vantec NexStar 3.1 I got on Newegg:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392087

There it is called the lovely "VANTEC NST-270A31-BK Aluminum / Plastic
2.5" Black Standard SATA Micro B 2.5” SATA 6 Gb/s to USB 3.1 Gen II
Type-A SSD/HDD Enclosure".

lsusb tells me it is a:

Bus 002 Device 008: ID 174c:1351 ASMedia Technology Inc.

It *seems* to work with `-d sat`, and I could complete a self-test
properly, so presumably this is just a matter of adding the USB IDs in
there.

Attached is the -x report for the drive ran on Debian GNU/Linux 9-alpha8 with:

$ sudo smartctl -q noserial -d sat  -x /dev/sdb

Cheers,

A.
