We have a KVM VM running Debian 7 installed from ISO which has been
allocated two cores and 4GB RAM on a modest but lightly loaded host with
one CPU, four 2.4GHz cores and 24GB of RAM (around 10GB free). No other
attributes like CPU cap or share have been changed from their defaults.
This VM runs builds of a rails app under jenkins.
Could that be performed in a zone rather then a KVM?
Running the same
thing on similar bare metal yields a build time of around 6 minutes.
The VM is coming in at a consistent 13 minutes. The build is local and
does not access any external network resources once it has checked out
the code from git.
Does the bare metal have more RAM? I have a large Linux KVM used to
build large C and C++ projects (I know it should be a zone, but it was
an experiment that go out of hand!) that runs about 8-9% slower than
bare metal.
As soon as you get RAM pressure, your build times will tumble.
