First of all you're going to be fighting against SmartOS to have it
re-add <username> to /etc/passwd or getting it to configure LDAP on each
reboot.
This is indeed another problem. Is there a way around that? Can I e.g. call a
script in /usbkey/config that modifies /etc/passwd and /etc/group? Should be
possible...

There are some examples in the wiki of the things people have done:
https://wiki.smartos.org/display/DOC/Allowing+user+CRUD+in+the+global+zone
https://wiki.smartos.org/display/DOC/Is+SmartOS+suitable+for+a+file+server

The basic idea is simple, though. SmartOS will look for additional SMF service manifests under /opt/custom/smf You put one or more services into place there that at boot time do whatever reconfiguration of the system is necessary to get it back into your desired state.
