Couldn't get the vmware vga drivers working on 2012R2. Bummer. But setting
vga=cirrus allows the guest to set its resolution to either 1024x768 or
1280x1024 (but nothing in between). This kind of fixes the problem and is
good enough for my purposes.

Or in other words, what Usama said except choose cirrus instead of vmware.
