I am a little late to the party on this thread, but wanted to respond
because I spent quite a bit of time on this topic when I first started
using SmartOS a few years ago.  SmartOS does support 4k drives, but you
just have to be a little more aware of block size with creating virtual
disks in a KVM instance.   When you create kvm instances, you will need to
set your virtual disk block size to  "block_size": 32768.   The default
block size doesn't work for 4k drives.

You won't see any problems what so ever with regular zones.

I wish I still had the reference where I found this information, but I've
lost it.  If you look back through the mailing list archives, you will see
where I talked at length about this topic.
