With the unification of SmartOS and SDC platforms, the trick of pre-creating the zpool prior to installation no longer works.
There is some work being done on a new installer, but it isn't committed yet. My trick has been to install SmartOS onto the SLOG disk (an SSD in my case) or some other disk that I won't be using in the real pool.
