I thought about this last night when I was putting that email together. Two reasons I can think: 1) the sysadmin who is the admin for that VM knows ubuntu better than solaris; or 2) you have some application you want to integrate with samba and it works (easier maybe) on Ubuntu. Plex for example? Or sonarr which is mono based.
Additional you may want NX desktops or something. I'm sure there are other reasons and it's great that joyent is moving us towards the best of both worlds.
