Jono,

FWIW, if you want to run both a local display and SmartOS on a single hardware
platform, you could consider VMware ESXi (or whatever it’s called now).

For quite a while I ran ESXi 5.5 with two VMs: one Hackintosh with OS X 10.9
and a GPU in passthru, and the second VM with SmartOS, several LSI HBAs and an
Intel NIC in passthru. Worked great. You do need to pay attention which GPUs
work properly in passthru, with ESXi and presumably with any other hypervisor
that supports passthru. Support in ESXi was mostly inofficial and on a
case-by-case basis, as I recall.

It worked great - but I would think twice about doing this in production. ;)

Best,
Chris
