Interesting. I was unable to login through both "vmadm console <uuid>" and "zlogin -C <uuid>". It seems the vmadm command might just be an alias for zlogin's console mode. I didn't realize that this console mode does not work when a root account's password isn't set. I'm new to SmartOS, so I can't tell at this stage if it's a design decision for zones to require non-empty password before console mode works, or if maybe that's a debian design choice for how PAM (possibly) handles console logins.
Anywho, I was able to get in with just plain "vmadm <uuid>". I'm happy. Thanks everyone!
