One thing that's different about SmartOS vs OmniOS or OI is that SmartOS never needs to update the grub config with e.g. beadm. There's an old webrev floating around that I think was trying to get things working with GRUB2: http://cr.illumos.org/~webrev/DKOI/grub2/
So you could probably boot up on OmnioOS or OI live/rescue environment quite easily like this, but integrating with beadm is more complicated than writing a kernel and boot archive into memory and running them...
