Possibly not very helpful, but when I created my first SmartOS installation
I could get away with pulling the physical disks which held the pool I wished
to keep (created under OmniOS).  Yes I could have restored the data, but it
had taken a good 12 hours to get it there in the first place.

Is that a possibility for you?
