I think a lot of the power of two plus parity "guideline" was regarding
4k/512 sector drives.

That said (8+3)x3, 2 hot spares and a slog could work for a 36 bay RAIDZ3
system if you want to stick to the power of two guideline.

Best bet is to performance test 9+2 vs 8+3 for your storage load.
