If you build SmartOS on your own, you should update both illumos-joyent
and smartos-live before continuing.

This work goes through and makes the experience of changing the MTU
smoother in SmartOS. You can now use nictagadm to set a MTU which will
take effect when the machine boots. The nic will be set to the largest
mtu of all nic tags over that nic. This also should work for
aggregations. In addition, this adds support for the MTU to the
configuration of vnics and aggrs in the /usbkey/config file as well as
adding an MTU property in vmadm. All this and more, has been updated on
the wiki page:

http://wiki.smartos.org/display/DOC/Managing+NICs

Note, this is not in this weeks release, it will be in the subsequent
one in two weeks.

If you have questions, please ask.
