Out of curiosity what brand of NIC do you have in your SmartOS host? I’ve encountered a scenario where the Broadcom NIC in an older Dell server refused to pass NTP traffic despite correct configuration. I never nailed down what was the root cause, but considering as soon as I turned on VLANs the NIC stopped passing traffic entirely and the larger issues with certain Broadcom NICs it figured it had bigger issues.
