You are absolutely right. If I actually put

set ncsize=nnn

in my copy of etc/system on the boot USB key, the kernel picks up the new value 
as shown by

# echo ncsize/D | mdb -k

even though /etc/system appears unchanged. Well, I guess I was being too 
careful this time.
