Can you post some more detail? The sorts of things that would help:
- is this a SmartOS release from smartos.org?
- what does "uname -v" tell you?
- what exact commands (vmadm, etc) did you run to
configure the CD, boot the VM, etc
- log or error output from "/zones/${vm_uuid}/root/tmp/vm.log"
for the failing VM
