It might help if you tell us which model. We maintain a set of complete
documentation on the models we use, including firmware and console
configuration, at http://eng.joyent.com/manufacturing. The documents in
question might be more easily viewed in Github at joyent/manufacturing.

I suggest taking a look at our sdcboot and ipxe repos on GH. They
address these problems.

Most SMCI models use ttyb ("COM2" for those still using DOS) for SoL.
If you're using the hardware port instead (presumably with a
concentrator), than this is probably correct.

How exactly did you do this? The specific format of the options is
important.

ipxe has to be configured at build time to use a particular serial port
or ports. Our ipxe, I believe, is configured to use ttyb as well as the
VGA port if one is present.

That's what we do.

I can assure you that all of our labs are configured in this way.
Everything after early firmware init goes to the serial-over-lan device,
including SmartOS's boot and getty. We even use kmdb just fine. I have
never tried doing the same with the hardware serial port, as we don't
have concentrators. Our experience with the SoL functionality has been
pretty good although in the absence of any profit motive I would choose
external concentrators instead.
