I have verified that USB legacy booting is enabled in the BIOS (two independent systems, one HP workstation and one SuperMicro server). Using https://us-east.manta.joyent.com/Joyent_Dev/public/SmartOS/smartos-latest-USB.img.bz2 Using the Windows tools, I have done this in diskpart first: list disk select disk X clean exit Second, writen (unzipped) .img using Win32DiskImager Now back in diskpart. Follow the USB instruction for windows or Linux and you should be good. Just remember don't boot UEFI.
