OK…thanks for the advice. On the SmartOS IRC channel, Ryan also recommended using Clonezilla. I took a look at Clonezilla last night. There does not seem to be a good wiki or page for the documentation for Clonezilla. Can you point me to your links for learning the tool? I use Clonezilla to move VMs from one hypervisor to another. Boot the Clonezilla ISO on the KVM box, dump the guest. Create an empty zone with the resources you need for the guest on the SmartOS system and restore the Clonezilla image to the zone. I found this is the easiest way to go. I do this to go from XEN to KVM, VMWare to KVM, etc. The only thing you have to worry about is drivers in Windows. Just a little pre-planing fixes that problem. This is the same procedure for making a virtio driver CD available to a Windows VM.
