Manta is designed and built to run on top of SDC and leverages services that SDC provides. > How many nodes / physical-machines does one need to see a performance > benefit from using Manta? > > Also, what would be the recommended amount of disk-space and/or RAM for > each of those nodes? A performance benefit compared to what? You could, for example, set up Manta in a single 8 Gb development VM that's running SDC, but that wouldn't be good for production. To better answer these, it comes down to a lot of questions of economics, desired capacity, and desired durability. For example, the manta storage nodes are going to want more storage. The amount of storage you put in a node is going to depend on how much you actually want. For example, do you want 1 Tb, 1 Pb, or something in between? If you follow the operator's guide - https://github.com/joyent/manta/blob/master/docs/manta-ops.md - you'll get some guidance on how durability and the number of machines / data centers you want to deploy in take effect. So really, it's hard to give guidance without knowing what it is you actually want to stand up.
