SmartOS is not a desktop operating system, and does not ship with the
necessary drivers for graphics, audio, etc.  As it is a live image
model with the OS loaded into main memory, shipping those drivers

ffmpeg2 is a utility for converting media formats rather than playing
them, but there are plenty of other music players provided, e.g. xmms
or rhythmbox, as well as a bunch of front-ends for mpd.

I'd suggest running one of the other illumos distributions such as
OpenIndiana or OmniOS, then installing pkgsrc as per the above
instructions.  The packages should work equally well on those
distributions (as you can see from that page I've demonstrated a full
desktop install on OmniOS), if not then it's a bug.
