feature in ubuntu. I think it still tries via /etc/motd to check if new updates and other stuff are available which require Network. So I think if you wait long enough it should timeout or even ctrl-c could work (not sure). Otherwise edit the /etc/motd to remove that stuff. @ joyent people maybe in the lx image you should wipe that stuff from motd.
