An alternative is to format the USB stick with a ZFS pool and boot that way (as a bonus you can then take snapshots and I've heard that it boots a little faster than pcfs...): http://blog.shalman.org/smartos-zfs-boot-media/ If you want to stick with pcfs, you could follow similar steps to format your USB stick at its full capacity and then install grub on it.
