Apologies in advance for a long e-mail. The problem I ran into requires some
background to understand it.

I was running out of disk space on "zones" on my server, so I bought some new
drives, set them up as a 3-disk mirror, installed SMARTOS on them from scratch
(on a second computer), and migrated VMs from my server to the new computer.
Everything went off without a hitch.

Next, on my server, I booted into rescue mode and renamed "zones" to
"old_zones" (zfs import zones old_zones) and shut down. On my second computer,
I booted into rescue mode and explicitly did a "zfs import zones" followed by a
"zfs export zones" (not sure if that was required). I moved the mirror onto my
server, with the old disks still present, booted into rescue mode, explicitly
imported "zones" from my new mirror and "old_zones" from my old disk set. I
then rebooted normally, only to discover that all VMs were being pulled from
"old_zones" and not "zones".

I shut down, disconnected all drives associated with "old_zones" and rebooted.
The system came up just fine, exactly as expected (though I did run into a dump
volume size problem that forced me to reset the volume size of that ZFS dataset
to get SMARTOS to boot). I shut down, reattached "old_zones" disks, and the
system again booted up with VMs from "old_zones" instead of "zones".

I was hoping to keep "old_zones" around and online in case I ran into an issue
with something that I forgot to copy over (3TB of data was migrated). Once I
felt good enough about it, I was going to destroy "old_zones" and use those
disks for online backup storage. However, I can't do that unless I can get the
system to use "zones" instead of "old_zones" when all disks are simultaneously
connected.

Does anybody know what's going on and how to accomplish what I'm trying to do?

Thanks,
John
