For the time being, that's still true.  You will need firmware that
provides an emulated BIOS boot environment.

Some work in the illumos community is on-going to get an updated,
EFI-capable boot loader.  Further work is tentatively on the horizon
after that for actual in-OS support for booting in a purely EFI
system.

That almost certainly isn't going to work without more work done in
illumos itself.
