The guest is Ubuntu 16.04. That shouldn't matter though because I ran "lspci" in the guest and there was only one ethernet adapter showing on the PCI bus. Also, the QEMU documentation says that startvm should have had an extra set of options on the qemu command line to provision the second NIC.
