John, Device passthrough into an LX zone is not likely to achieve the result you desire. We do not provide meaningful emulation of the device interfaces which UPS-related Linux programs would expect. This includes aspects such as ioctls, major/minor numbering, and appropriate entries in devfs/procfs/sysfs.
I believe that some folks drop a minimal pkgsrc footprint into the GZ in order to install some of the UPS-interfacing software which is available. That may be the best approach.
