FWIW, I just worked through all those issues myself a couple weeks ago. :P

You're correct about the path variabls, AFAIK. Per Mr. Perkin's informative
post, <https://www.perkin.org.uk/posts/smartos-global-zone-tweaks.html>there's
a post at  
http://www.psychicfriends.net/blog/archives/2012/03/21/smartosorg_run_things_at_boot.html
 that appears to have the info you need. (It takes a bit to tease it out,
there's an example SMF manifest for download, and mention of the "Manifold"
util to create manifests there.)
