Stock Smart OS native zones images (16.4.0) use postfix by default as MTA. Nevertheless, file "/etc/mailer.conf" contains references to sendmail and, for instance, if "mail [email protected]" (from the command line) fails to deliver to the local postfix, the failed mail will be queued in "/var/spool/clientmqueue"... a directory that postfix doesn't know about and no process in the system will clean it up ever. That mail will vanish with no warning.

""" "sendmail" is NOT installed. I have a "milter" library to connect Postfix to my antispam/antivirus daemons. Correct approach: If postfix is the MTA in the system, "/etc/mailer.conf" should reflect it. Moreover, command line "mail" should use postfix delivery agent, maybe via a wrapper to be parameter compatible with sendmail. "mail" resides in "/usr/bin/mail", in the read only filesystem. I can not change it. But it delivers emails indirectly via "mailwrapper" and "/etc/mailer.conf". My platform es "joyent_20161013T025521Z". I know that "postfix" has some sendmail compatibility builtin, but I haven't researched the details yet: <http://www.postfix.org/sendmail.1.html>. If that is close enough, changing "/etc/mailer.conf" would be enough but it should be documented somewhere OR, better, be the default when postfix is the installed MTA in the system. Checking around, there are a "/opt/local/sbin/sendmail" binary around, and a "strings" shows that it belong to postfix. Looks like would be enough to replace "/etc/mailer.conf" paths. May I suggest this change for a future release or SmartOS images?. Am I missing anything? PS: Sorry for wasting your time with a badly written email.
