Another heads up. It bit me on a Global Zone installation as well.

a) The recovery instructions don't cover that, but you can figure it out.

b) Now that pkgin lives in /tools/opt, you have various stuff sitting in
   there that you didn’t have before (in my case some salt config files).
   Fortunately I do get snapshots of /opt but unfortunately I hadn't
   added /opt/tools to my GZ backup script (i.e. recovery wasn't as easy as
   it should have been).

c) The pkgin installation instructions at

   https://pkgsrc.joyent.com/install-on-illumos/#tools-install

   contain a SHA checksum for each package, plus the optional gpg method, but
   only the gpg digests are held in the archives pointed to by that page
   https://pkgsrc.joyent.com/packages/SmartOS/bootstrap/

d) related to c) I have had various problems with the gpg command

      gpg --recv-keys 0xDE817B8E

   which doesn't always work.  I'll post an example when I have more time
